Enough of the “Flybox”
For the love of god, please put the flybox bit at THE END OF THE PODCAST. I don’t want to have to skip around for 5 minutes to find the start of the interview. 90% of the fly box questions are so basic it’s a huge waste of time IMO. I stopped listening to this pod because it’s so front loaded with irrelevant fodder. It’s like 30-40 minutes of these questions every time.

Josh Nugent
Just listened to Josh Nugent and the Seven Deadly Sins of hooking and landing fish. Absolutely top-notch episode! Josh was well prepared and used outstanding examples from a wide variety of fish and situations. Even for a big fan of the show, this one stood out as exceptional. Highly recommended!

Great show… but…
Please never have any guests like Rham Emmanuel on. That was a painful listen. As I suffered through listening him tell us how he would “yell at anglers to get out of HIS private hole on the Madison” as well as his issues with the names of flys, thumbing his nose at the great pioneers of our sport who have invented and named the flys we enjoy. I would also like to know where he purchases his waders with “velvet” on the soles. This guy is a joke and the exact type of rich pompous jerk who gives our sport a bad name. If I was a betting man I would have to say he cannot tie his own fly on his tippet without the assistance of a guide I’ve been a faithful listener for years, and every show is excellent until I heard that. Rham Emmanuel is exactly what our sport needs less of.

Great content; greatly improved production!
Back in August of 2024, I posted a three-star review and explained that the reason for now giving the podcast five stars was due to poor production value. Well, Tom and Jamie at Orvis took note, and recently I have noticed a major improvement in the production value.
The content continues to be the greatest aspect of this podcast, though. I work as an attorney in the world of land conservation and land use, and I fly fish and camp with my family when I can get away from work. Tom has done a lot of great episodes lately about habitat restoration that have really excited me.
The recent episode with Cameron Aker is a good example. I like how these episodes are reminders that things like fishing, hunting, birdwatching, hiking, camping, etc. are all fun hobbies that people enjoy, but in order to keep doing them, we need to be aware of how we protect the resources that we use. We also need to understand how our activities impact the farmers and foresters who are providing products that we use all the time. It helps bring fly fishing into the greater context, and in a world where media (especially social media) makes everything seem polarizing, it’s nice to get some examples of how we can work together for multiple good outcomes.

Priceless
This podcast has been a priceless resource for honing skills, and discovering new facets of the sport. Tom’s books are also a must have for any angler’s library. Keep up the great work!

Love when I hear content for close to home species
I enjoy the fly box section a ton!
Always great to hear Tom’s insights on all things fishing.
One thing we need more of from this show is more warm water species fishing, particularly with bass, panfish, gar, bowfin, anything that swims in water near my doorstep and not 2-3hrs away in a far off stream. That would make it more relatable to me.
Great job either way, thanks!

Fly fishing podcast
Almost 70 years old and look forward to weekly podcast especially the fly box with great ideas and information. Started with a bamboo rod and now use fiberglass fly rods for bream and crappie on small lake. Still use vintage fly reels with good drags and still have a Shakespeare auto reel that works. Use Orvis lines, flys and tippets but still can’t afford the orvis rods and reels.

Wealth of Information
Great resource, and the breadth of information is top notch.

More Fishing Discussion with Leas Political Bias Please
I enjoy the fishing tips from the fly box. Too often this is overcrowded by Rosenbauer’s political perspective and tendency to correct folks tips that point to saving money that do not involve fly shops. He also has a tendency to invite guests who have political statements to make.

Relaxing and Informative for a Beginner
This podcast has been great for helping me navigate the overwhelming amount of information in the fly fishing world and gets me fired out to fish every time. The listener questions are always fun to listen to and I find the podcast nice and relaxing.

Best Fly Fishing Podcast (still)
Tom Rosenbauer is a top notch podcast host, fly fishing or otherwise. Nice format that starts with the fly box (listener questions) and then a guest for the second half. The host doesn’t shy from criticism and isn’t a weekly puff piece for the brand. Easy to listen to

Poisoned by woke agenda
Used to really enjoy listening and the Orvis brand, but I can’t stand the affirmation of the mindless and harmful woke agenda. Coddling and affirming the feelings of sick people to avoid the wrath of the woke mob is not empowering, but cowardly and plain dishonest. Get back to fly fishing and maybe I’ll give it another try.

Tom got too woke
I used to really enjoy this show when it was about fly fishing. Over the last year or so Tom and Orvis have gotten so “woke” it’s bled into the podcast. I’ll still listen, but Tom needs to stay away from some topics and focus on fly fishing.

Tom’s politics
Used to be a great show, lately he’s been spouting a bit of “progressive” politics along with fishing tips. Too bad, it would be nice if he would stay in his lane and talk about fishing.

Orvis Fly Fishing Guide Podcast
Tom is expert — he’s broad and deep in his field; educational — he’s reduced fly fishing down to key principles and points that he preaches consistently across a variety of platforms, from podcasts to books to videos, imparting these principles while continually pointing out there are no absolutes; and finally, he’s an enthusiastic cheerleader for protecting the planet, for which our fresh and salt water natural resources are a critical part. And he doesn’t take himself too seriously by the way.

Great info. Drop the politics please..
On the very first episode I sampled the host Tom repeatedly scolded his guest for using the word “fisherman” as to not offend anyone.
Please grow up and realize that the world is not that fragile.
Nobody with any real interest in the sport is going to dissuaded by a harmless word.
As a scientist who often fishes with my husband, we shared a laugh at the idea of trying to pursue our quarry without knowledge of separate behavior in fish as it pertains to their sex…
Aside from that odd introduction there is a lot of good info..

Informative but becoming PC
I’ve enjoyed so much different varieties of information on this podcast. Though recently on the interview section with Todd Tanner. Tom went on to continuously correct Todd about using the word “ fisherman” and requested he use the word “Fisher” in order to be more inclusive. Tom interrupted him several times and then Tom went on to to say “fisherman” out about 1:14 into the podcast. Man can be a gender or non gender word like “mankind” referring to a species people. Maybe just leave the PC woke nonsense out of it. I appreciate Tom’s wisdom and what Orvis is doing for the fly fishing world. In the end, we are all just “HUMAN” not “HUPERSONS”

Painful at times; Could be better
Stale is the word that keeps coming to mind when I scroll through the episodes. In the age of Orvis’ 50/50 On The Water, having one female interview in an entire year isn’t a great statistic. And while I adore Tim Flagler and am a better tier for watching him, I question whether there were there no other tiers to have on in a 6 month span of time. The Fly Box Q&A is a great idea but I struggle having to waste 5-10 minutes of my valuable time up front listening to some of the dumb questions and rambly responses before I can get to the content I came for. Placement may be key here — put it behind the topic, or midpoint in an intermission. I’ve abandoned listening on numerous occasions because the topic had not gotten under way in a timely fashion and I lost interest. Answering idiotic questions such as ‘what method should I fish X river with?’ isn’t necessary and comes off as passive-aggressive snark. The critical call-outs are unnecessary. Delete the question and find others to respond to. Lastly, Orvis offers Fly Fishing 101 classes as well as a robust video tutorial section online. Many folks don’t know these resources exist. They should really be Tom’s go-to answers when responding to questions involving new or novice anglers.

Orvis Did it again
Well just like everything else they do , they did a great job on this too . Yes some of the questions in the fly box are ridiculous and flat out dumb but Tom works through them. The guests are pretty interesting and informative. Keep it going Orvis this is good stuff .

Would have preferred a real podcast on Cicadas
While the episode was entertaining for the first 20min, I think a lot of people would have preferred a informative podcast with a real expert on fishing the brood x hatch. You guys missed the mark here. Disappointing

WOW! You got me on that one! I thought it was for real until the rich English snob with the Range Rover! I listened with delight for the rest of the show. Loved it. You say cicada, I say cicada, and down south they say “cay daddy”! Classic, good, clean humor. Thank you!
