A Window
I wish millions of Palestinians and other Muslims would listen to this series! Another world, a charming, poetic Jewish cosmos but permeated with pathos and danger. I am Gentile, and though I traveled to Iran in my youth, only just barely sensed this world existed.

Very beautiful!
Thank you for sharing your family stories. This is magical and captivating! I love hearing the Persian accents. When I was a little girl in the 70s in Jerusalem we lived next to a Persian family that we adored. This podcast brings back nice memories.

Beautiful and educational
This story was incredibly absorbing on so many levels. I loved learning about what life was like for Jewish people in Iran during the “Golden Age.” I especially loved listening to the voices of family members and hearing the interviews. I also loved listening to the singing. I downloaded Galeet’s album. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful story. Will there be a Season 2?

Wonderful!
My husband was a Baha’i from Shiraz, Iran, where he sang and had a little band in which he played violin and his youngest sister also sang until they came to the United States to pursue a higher education. They were quite well regarded and well-known in their community. As a fifth generation Californian of European descent, Persian singing was strange at first, but it grew on me and I found this podcast to be poignantly reminiscent of the times I spent with my Persian family. What a loving, hospitable, warm, welcoming culture!

I haven’t been this taken by a podcast since Serial back in 2013-ish. The story is so absorbing and the characters are incredibly lovable. Thank you to Danielle and Galeet for sharing their specific yet relatable family story.

The Nightingale of Iran
I loved this as a Greek American from the west coast Ive known PErsian Jews, mostly in California. IT left me wanting more detail, especially about the grandfather Younes: what had he gone through: childhood : etc. You touched on it but didnt delve into it! Thanks

Beautiful
Small-town, Mid-Western gentile by birth, world citizen by curiosity. This has immediately become my favourite podcast to-date. I love this family - both sides, all generations. I had no idea what I was in for when I hit “play” on episode 1. By the end of that first episode, I couldn’t stop listening. I spent the evening entertained … and receiving a beautiful historical, musical, religious lesson that I know will stay with me. Thank you for sharing. متشکرم תודה

Captivating
I listened to the first four episodes in one day and excitedly waited for the next two. This story is beautiful and fascinating. There were so many details of both Jewish and Iranian history I had never heard before, but it was the depth of family experiences that made them meaningful. I truly didn’t want this podcast to end.

Why do you keep calling it Persian?
Perhaps your parents should educate you that it’s Farsi or Iranian. I don’t think it’s been called Persian for 1000 years and you’re miseducated everybody.

Incredibly touching and educational
I was brought to tears throughout this podcast and of course when it ended. It’s fascinating as a Persian Jewish woman to learn about the story of another Persian Jewish family. I learned so much of our history and if felt like my family story. It explained so much of my family, why they acted/responded to much of the world as they did. I feel closer to my family and culture. I loved this podcast, thank you Dardashti sisters and family. Bless you all.

A must
Such a fascinating/emotional story of a beautiful family’s epic tale. A podcast that is a must for anyone interested in modern Jewish history, the trials and tribulations of acceptance as a minority, and the pain of immigration, all with the backdrop of these incredible voices and a loving family’s journey to uncover their origins.

An extraordinary story, beautifully told
This podcast invites you on a musical ride through nations and generations of family. It is so much more than one family’s immigration story. It unravels the incredible relationship between Iranian Muslims and Jews spanning centuries. The music is stunning, even for a listener who doesn’t understand the words or meanings. Absolutely binge-worthy!

The shoulders we stand on
This podcast traces the quest of Galeet and Danielle Dardashti to better understand their Jewish Iranian roots and the true stories of their father and grandfather, who were famous singers there before life and societal changes caused the family to leave. The series is personal, filled with precious old audio recordings of family members talking and singing, and also with interviews with people who have historical perspective and personal memories of the time, including their parents. The story is filled with the kinds of insights and warmth that give us a real feeling for the lives of Danielle and Galeet’s forebears, and so a window into them as well. We all stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. Most of us are or come from immigrants and the stories of those who brought us all here are precious as we seek to understand ourselves, our own lives, and our nation’s many roots in greater depth. Danielle is a great narrator as she takes us on this journey of identity and understanding, and we sense the great love this family has for one another. Galeet adds nuance and brings the music that is the lifeblood of this family in; the music at the end of each episode, from Galeet’s recording Monajat featuring her grandfather and her “singing together,” is incredibly beautiful as well.

Riveting and well made podcast!
Great family history/music podcast. Have heard Galeet sing and speak and this fills in so much about Persian Jews. Waiting for episode 3.

Great story but…
I was riveted to the first episode of this new podcast and couldn’t wait for the next. So when episode 2 arrived, I eagerly dove in. Unfortunately, while I enjoy and appreciate the singing clips, I believe there are too many of them in this episode. They annoyingly stall the momentum of the storytelling and seem to be used as filler to make the episode longer. Hoping episode 3 will be better.

Can’t wait to hear what’s next
Danielle and Galeet are the perfect hosts for this compelling tale. They use music and family history to unveil a mystery about a time and place we should all learn more about.

What fun to hear this family’s joyous music! I can picture the dusty basement full of cassette tapes. I can’t wait to hear more and to understand the question Danielle and Galeet are looking to uncover.

Beautifully told story about a fascinating family
This is an awesome podcast, and only on episode 1. I feel like the current generation (the hosts and storytellers) were born to tell the story of their ancestors! It is masterfully narrated and researched. I already feel like I'm part of their tribe and cannot wait for all the family secrets to finally be revealed. More please!
ewakgirl
Absolutely fantastic
Tracing the story of Younes and Farid Dardashti’s lives moving from Iran to Israel and the United States is fascinating enough as the history of an individual family. What makes it even more riveting, however, is the way that their family history reveals an astonishing amount about culture, religion and geopolitics from the 1950s to the present. The Dardashti sisters, Danielle and Galeet, are the perfect people to tell this story. The podcast allows them to compellingly combine their respective areas of expertise—Danielle in broadcasting, and Galeet in anthropology and music. And without giving up too many spoilers, the source material upon which they base their storytelling is shockingly rich and extensive.
