Best podcast. Love it
Steph is the go to for ALL things school counseling. Not only does she cover topics thoroughly but she makes them enjoyable! Although I’m retired now, I’m planning on doing some trainings for a local school and this podcast has helped me brush up on my school and school counseling lingo. Now I’ve been binge listening any that are similar to my training topic. When I was still a school counselor this podcasts brought me so much encouragement! Thanks Steph for doing the work it takes to make this wonderful podcasts!

The Real Talk School Counselors Need
Steph speaks candidly about the realities of our role and tackles the questions many of us still wrestle with, even when it’s uncomfortable. Even when I don’t fully agree, her points are thoughtful, well-supported, and grounded in research. She offers hard truths and ideas for how we can lead more effectively in our work. Definitely worth listening to if you want to reflect and grow as a school counselor.

Tragic? More like magic!
I am a former foster mom, now adoptive mom to four children with special needs and a whole lotta trauma. I am also a grad student working towards becoming a school counselor. These podcasts are amazing, and what I heard was called
tragic I’d like to relabel as magic! (And by magic I mean evidence based and well thought out!) These episodes are quick and easy listens that have helped me in both my home life and professional career (I currently work with students with varying needs). I cannot thank the hosts of this podcast enough for easy and pleasant listening, fit for busy schedules and packed with helpful tools for the children we work with and love!

She makes great points!
I listened to this podcast as a way for me to grow myself as a school counselor. She challenges me in almost every episode to make smaller changes in how I work with students. I just finished the episode about not accommodating anxiety, and she did make some great points. I only wish she would have included some accommodations that will decrease anxiety.

So incredibly helpful
Steph, thank you for always providing us with research based information. Today’s podcast on anxiety really made me pause and think about my approach. I am excited to use the techniques discussed.

Doesn't sugarcoat!
Listening to this episode was both validating and heartbreaking. I appreciate that this podcast does not sugarcoat those hard truths. It names, the frustrations and challenges so many of us are experiencing, but also helping listeners feel less alone. There is value in having a space where these realities are acknowledged and where counselors can reflect on what the profession has become. While not every message will resonate with every listener, this episode reflects a complex and often discouraging state of school counseling today. These are exactly the kind of conversations that need to happen if meaningful change it's ever going to take place.

The One!
This is the only podcast you need to listen to for school counselors! Steph tells it like it is and I appreciate her honesty! As a second year counselor, I have been able to take so much from this podcast and not only learn more efficient ways of handling paperwork and some situations, it has made me a more aware person and allows me to spend more time on the important stuff. Keep up the amazing work!

What the School Counseling World Needs
I love this podcast. It tells the truth and gives a lot of good info about the things we’re challenged by daily. I never miss a week!

Tragic
Self-righteous and inaccurate. I don’t believe she actually thinks some of these things…she just takes controversial positions as a shameless grab for listeners.

Condescending
I listen to this podcast because it does make me think and gives me another perspective. Steph can be very condescending toward TPT sellers and other counselors who have memberships. She is also quick to say ASCA fails us, which shows her ignorance of the organization. She mentioned that the 5th edition of the National Model was created as a money maker for ASCA. While I was at ELEVATE, the new LDI, we found out that the 5th edition is a free download, so not really a money-maker. Sad to say, but I give Steph Johnson D- on her podcast. I want to like it, but she just is more judgmental than needed. I hope my review doesn’t get deleted.

It was an honor to have served as a School counselor
I wanted to take a moment to sincerely thank you Step and the group for the encouragement, support and patience you all so generously extended to me during my brief time as a school counselor. Your guidance helped me navigate the ups and downs of the profession and your ability to uplift and reassure was a steady light during uncertain moments. Though I am no longer employed as a School counselor I carry with me the kindness and compassion that you and the group so willingly shared. I am especially grateful for the sense of belief of belonging you fostered for so many of us. I can’t say Thank you enough and please continue the good work you all! Keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I will do the same!
Grateful,
Laila

Time to Grow
Long time listener, new engager here.... My first year was covid, what a hard year to start, I also had a 6 month old at home. My second year I had my second child and was out half the year, and since then we have been in SURVIVAL mode. I always listened to the podcast but couldn't find the time to participate much past that. Well now we are in the 5th year and are ready to start growing my craft and expertise. And this podcast has really helped me find a path to do just that. Steph is so real and honest and insightful. I truly feel like she has all the answers and is a fountain of knowledge. I couldn't be more thankful for this podcast. My morning commute wouldn't be the same without it!

First Year School Counselor
I listened to this podcast throughout my internship and into my new career as an elementary school counselor. I find it to be uplifting, educational, and relevant to the field of school counseling. It is an overwhelming job, but each time I listen to an episode I feel empowered to go to work and make change in my school and in my community! I would recommend this podcast, (and have) to many coworkers and colleagues. Keep up the good work! 🤩

New listener
I’ve just started to listening to the podcast in the mornings while getting ready for work. It’s a calm way to start my day, but I also have a lot of takeaways to get my mind revved up and steps to take to make changes in my program. Last week I took my “What you say in here, stays in here” sign down and threw it in the trash. I appreciate Steph’s knowledge and expertise!

Support for a new school counselor
Always look forward to listening each week- usually while I’m at home doing the dishes🙂
As a new school counselor, I have found the podcast to be a good balance of bringing to light our day to day hurdles while still reassuring, we as listeners of our professional skills and best intentions we have for our students. Often listening to the podcast is the only time I hear praise or confirmation for the work and devoted time I put into my counseling program. Thank you Steph!

Old Dogs, New Tricks
As a School Counselor of 17 years in Texas, I continue to learn, grow, and feel supported by your Podcast.
We are in an Island sometimes on our campuses and it’s nice to feel that connection with others.
It’s great encouragement at a time where our jobs are so needed, yet at times doubted and under supported.
Please keep up the great work!

Beyond grateful
This podcast, and all of the resources School for School Counselors offers, are game changing. I am in my second year of getting back in the field of School Counseling, 15 years after graduating. Needless to say I’ve had A LOT to learn, and for awhile got lost in all the noise out there. But since finding this podcast, Steph is my #1 guide. Everything is explained so clearly, and with such a realistic perspective, and tons of empathy. I am just incredibly grateful to be able to absorb all the knowledge and insight!

Exactly what I’ve needed
I’m still in school for counseling but I’ve been a teacher for 15 years and I can easily see the disconnect between what I’m taught and what I think the actual experience will be like. I am so comforted by their realness here, but their transparency and honesty. I feel incredibly understood and supported and I’m encouraged as I set out as a brand new school counselor this fall (even though I’m still in school). I am learning so much from this podcast and feel so grateful for this realistic window into the world I’m entering. Thank you!
