Nick, you don’t need more than a billion dollars, dude.
I have been listening to this podcast for a few years, and as someone who has always been interested in economics and economic policy as it pertains to the working class and to poverty, I have really enjoyed it!
However, I recently listened to the episode with Ingrid Robeyns. I hadn’t heard of her before, but she was totally speaking my language! Her policy suggestions regarding “Limitarianism” are right on, perhaps though with higher wealth and transformative asset limits than what she has suggested.
Nick wasn’t so on board with the idea of limiting wealth. Goldie asked Nick if he’d be willing to entertain the idea of limiting wealth if the ceiling was set at 1B, and he said NO! That single answer changed my opinion of the show completely.
Before that podcast, I might have given four or five stars. But I find the fact that Nick Hanauer feels like even 1B is not enough money absolutely reprehensible. Nobody needs that much money, it is an unfathomable amount of money that cannot even be spent in multiple lifetimes, even if you threw thousands of dollars in the trash every single day.
We don’t need more billionaires polluting the environment with whatever industry they have their greedy little fingers in. We don’t need more garbage merchandise getting manufactured that ultimately end up in landfills or oceans. We don’t need more data centers and bitcoin mining devouring our water resources and heating our planet.
Make the insanity stop.
Look, I find the idea of middle out economics very intriguing. But it has become entirely evident to me that Nick’s interest in economics equality is mostly performative, a way to seem like one of the good billionaires that cares about inequality and poverty, while simultaneously maintaining the status quo. Much like in the way that Nick and Goldie’s good buddy Anand Giridharadas writes about in his book Winners Take All.
Aside from the severe inequality extreme wealth creates economically for people, it has disastrous ENVIRONMENTAL consequences. Scientists recently have been sounding the alarm bells about climate change, and how we are rapidly approaching the point of no return. What is Nick Hanauer going to do with tens of billions of dollars if the earth and its inhabitants are dying from extreme hothouse conditions?
Sure, you can build yourself a solar powered luxurious impermeable mega shelter with all the latest technology, the best insulation and cooling system available, plus an indoor garden and decades worth of emergency rations. But good luck sleeping at night, after you watch regular humans and other creatures die all around you from your icy throne.
Also, put Goldie’s name in the title of the d*mn podcast. Five stars for Goldie.

Great program, great policy for a Project 2028. If Civic Ventures isn’t writing this, it should be. Thank you so much.

Don’t listen if you prefer ignorance
Very informative on how the economy really works and the middle class is being exploited for the benefit of the 1%

My all time favorite podcast
I have been listening to Pitchfork Economics since 2019. I’ve never missed an episode and I recommend it to people about once a week, no exaggeration. It has helped me become way more informed on macroeconomic issues and been a gateway to tons of learning about how the economy isn’t working for so many people. Could not recommend more highly!

Listen to this podcast!
An intelligent look at the many layers of our economic system, really smart guests, and a solid plan for how to make our system better. Everyone should follow this podcast and listen weekly.

Always a reliable source for fresh economic insights
Pitchfork Economics is a fount of good ideas and incisive critiques of the many poor ideas that have gotten us into our political, cultural, and economic mess.

Wonderful podcast on how we need to rethink our approach to capitalism, work, and trade. We need more politicians listening to this.

Immigration
I liked everything discussed but consider the following:
1- it may not be the best to compare to Denmark. In the US up-skilling is a lot more expensive than anywhere in EU
2- complexity: something should be designed about social benefits (health, SSA, etc) so it doesn’t become a fairness of entitlements for immigrants that travel back and forth and not become permanent part of the fabric here don’t disadvantage natives - even if it’s in appearance or some difference
3- I totally agree that no business model that gains profits on the back of below poverty immigrants or natives should survive and make it everyone else’s problem

A fantastic podcast
Well, I did think Bush was an imposter by pretending to be a conservative. I thought he was a terrible, I don't want to say liberal, but he was certainly not a fiscal conservative.
He, as I said, had huge deficits. If we had simply kept budget policy on automatic pilot, where it was in January 2001 when Bush took office, by the time he left office, we would have literally paid off the national debt. But, in fact, the national debt doubled”
I cannot get enough of the podcast.

Working Class Labor
Working with one’s hands can be met with the need for building construction. We just require that the skills, apprenticeships and the tax incentives exist for these jobs.
The new state green energy skills for home construction and build out, also the plumbers and carpenters for remodel and modernization of existing structures.
We see neither side discussing the plan to GET the 3-5 million homes of all types get built. That there is a demand for multi-generational and affordable housing for half the population that developers have refused to construct.

Democracy seed round
Is there any interest among investors to fund renewal of democracy? The Trump carnage era is literally burning 240 years of American democracy to the ground. Is anyone creating a vision for how we navigate this? If the pro-democracy billionaires aren’t going to lead, what good is their fortune? Nick, Mark Cuban, Bill Gates, Soros- there must be some conversation going on between you guys? Please tell me you’re not sitting back and just looking for the business opportunities in the ashes?

Awesome pod
One of the few offering concrete policy-driven left economic visions. Keep up the good work

Interesting, thoughtful, but there is one flaw
The presenters have a definite PoV but they are open about it. It’s one I happen to agree with.
My issue with this podcast is how much Goldstein rants. He interrupts Hanauer regularly. I get that he’s the glib, more entertaining speaker and the team may feel it need that element. But he goes too far.

Very left
Seems like the hosts are very liberal and anti capitalism. I’m fine with a showing talking through that, but not advertising as a neutral show with really subtle undertones of socialism.

Became a mouthpiece for Bidenomics
Sad to see what I thought was a good channel of analysis and pushback from the lens of capitalism skepticism’s to a full mouthpiece to moronic concepts like “yeah we can fix capitalism” and “surely bidenomics are great”
Good riddance

End stage capitalism
Like to hear about recent thoughts, views, criticisms about “ end stage capitalism “.

I appreciate the positive, realistic policy ideas
It’s rare in current media to find commentary around capitalism that is focused on making capitalism work well. There is plenty out there opposing it completely, or praising it completely, or pretending that bad ideas are really great ideas that are going to work for the people they’re shilling them too. That is where Pitchfork Economics comes in with its wonky cheerleading for a vision of kinder, more effective capitalism.
I was glad to see wage theft as a recent topic but disappointed that different forms of wage theft were not explored in more detail. They spoke on a high level about classification and evading taxes but I wanted to hear much more discussion around the specific ways that corporations misclassify workers. I don’t think enough people are aware of what this looks like IRL and if they were they’d start to realize how pervasive it is. The idea of criminalizing wage theft by employers would be a game changer in terms of labor policy.

Flying is not my concern.
I want to start by saying I love this podcast. I listen to it every week, and I’ve learned a lot. However, the flying is miserable episode seemed so out of touch to me. I don’t care if it’s miserable to fly. Most of the people I know can’t afford to fly anywhere for any reason. Flying being miserable is just one more symptom of the erosion of our society.

Insightful!
Thank you for an easy way to understand “middle out bottom up” economics!! I have a republican neighbor who thinks the reason her portfolio is doing so well is that the interest rates haven’t gone up recently and that Biden controls the feds and interest rates!! Now I have some easy to understand reasons why her economic outlook is rosey and she should consider voting for Biden to keep it going!!

Econ: a narrative that has embedded itself into the world.
I greatly admire what Nick and his crew are doing to change how people view economic theory as a way to shift the political framework. Very informative too!

Great, informative podcast

Middle out wins
Great podcast! Middle out economics will help save Democracy.

Sweet truth.
In a sincere, clear voice, with not a trace of condescension, Nick and Goldie help us understand what’s actually happening in our economic environment. Then it’s up to us to support policies that move the country forward.

Great podcast!
I absolutely love this show. I’ve listened to it for a couple of years now. I am a clinical social worker and I appreciate the intersection of economics and people’s access to food/shelter/fair work.

One of two weekly must-listens
I always listen to Akimbo and Pitchfork Economics. I love the descriptive header for this show: explaining who gets what and why. If you listen to economists, Republicans and Democrats since the 1970’s, and even religious types, you discover the underlying beliefs that government is bad, poor people deserve to be poor, and government budgets are exactly like home budgets. No, no, no. You’ll learn that trickle-down economics benefits a few while middle-out benefits everyone. I used to believe all the ideas I just mentioned. But, I got gently “pitch-forked”. There’s a kinder way. Nick and Goldie and their crew are carrying the torches.

An automatic listen
The way topics get broken down here helps me really understand economics in a way that improves on what I already had. I don’t know how many times I’ve referenced something from this show while explaining current events to others. Not my only source by a long shot, but always relevant and accessible, so certainly one of my favorite. I hope to see more people understand why we need these kinds of changes in policy.

Terrific podcast
It’s a great podcast, although sometimes it’s more depressing to know the truth.
I’m willing to run for MI state or federal office and run on this platform if I can get Nick to bankroll my campaign.

Biased, hard left political bent
Some of these episodes appear to be cherry picking data to fit preconceived political narratives. They’re not neutral or actually data based, despite claims to the contrary. Disappointing and makes this a lot of garbage you have to sort through. Not sure it’s worth the effort. There are a lot of other places to get rounded information. If you just listen to this you’ll end up ignorant.

This podcast is great for understanding how we got here. It also helps us see how we get to a better place.

Love this podcast and Nick Hanauer's perspective on how to save what's left of our country!
This should be required listening for everyone concerned about what's happening to our failing democracy and economy. He and his cohost interview excellent knowledgeable people and I love the deep dives coupled with focus on what we can do to address the complex issues facing us. Thank you, and keep 'em coming !

This podcast is indispensable. It offers fresh, rarely seen perspectives on important issues.

Drifting to the extreme
Nick & crew have done a lot of nice work with minimum wage, but the pod has drifted from an informative take on neoliberal economics to a more general conservative-bashing venue with an incrementally more favorable stance on destructive and extremist economic ideas like UBI and reparation.

They have guests talking about a lot of different aspects of economics in language that is understandable.

Great way of communicating.
This podcast is one of the best out there. Bring people of different background to talk the aspects of economic problems that the world is up on. Best of the best!! I noticed that some give them just one star. That is a bunch of crap, some people do not want this podcast be successful it comes with the territory. Hopefully little by little we get more people to get involved and the Community grows!!

I have learned more about economics from this podcast than I have in my entire adult life! These folks and their guests really provide great insight into our neoliberal economic policies. Nick needs to run for president!

Inflation isn’t happening
My father in law insisted last fall inflation wasn’t happening. He quoted a word salad of nonsense from this particular podcast. I don’t have the heart to tell him any idiot with 1 semester of economics could have seen this coming. You guys are doing a public disservice.
