One of (if not the best) horror fiction podcasts out there
I’ve been listening to OGA for a few years now and it still stands as my favorite story based podcast. It’s so inspiring to hear people come together to create something they all hold dear. All while being seeking our souls to the Outer Dark to do it. Keep it up yall!

Feels Like a Lost World
There’s something about this show that pulls me in. Something in me wishes it was real. Maybe it’s the draw of rich characters, the magic and mystery of Appalachia, the eternal challenge of the Dark countered by the Green, where listeners can even sympathize with some of the evil characters. And by evil I mean Evil. Morality is at once sure and the dividing line certain- yet not always, and not even in the same characters. When the writers are off on live tours, I’m impatient. A friend recommended OGA to me last fall (2024); it’s the first podcast I’ve ever listened to, and it’s the one by which I judge every other one - which is terrible b/c no others measure up. I binged every season, trying hard to draw out the episodes. All caught up, I miss that world and the ppl in it. You will not be disappointed.

Old Gods of Appalachia
I have enjoyed this podcast, one of my favorites, to get lost in when theres too much on my mind ver the years this show takes me away from all of it. The narrators are great, the story line keeps you wanting to know whats going to happen next & the breaks between seasons cant go by quick enough for me.

Holy cow
Six whole minutes of commercials to support meager and erratic content output
Very sad used to be much better befor selling out for corporate sponsorship and liberal ideology. Shame

One of the best podcasts around. Such complex characters and well developed stories to get lost in. By far my favorite listen.

One of the best podcasts!
I listen to alot of podcasts. I’m into sci-fi supernatural stuff and this podcasts is it!!! I get it may say it’s a horror podcasts but for me it’s not that at all!! The way the story is told, the imagery, the way it’s laid out to take you through a journey is amazing!!!! 10/10 rating! Nothing less!! The intro must has become my favorite!

Incredible storytelling. Solid world building. So much talent. I can't believe Apple Podcasts has kept this one hidden from me.

Best Horror Anthology
I can’t say enough about the creative writing and performance of this podcast. I’ve searched for other stories and NONE rival this one. My only negative are the political comments made during interviews or at the end of the wonderful episodes. It won’t keep me from listening to, but would be much better if things were kept politically neutral. Keep writing amazing stories.

My absolute favorite podcast!
I love cosmic horror, and came across this whilst looking for a good horror podcast. As a born and bred New Englander, I love the Appalachian setting, and the story/stories are fantastic. I love this podcast so much.

New format
I love Old Gods of Appalachia, but wish the new format had all of the subscriber exclusives in listening order with the base episodes. Having to remember where Build Mama a Coffin etc fit in with the release dates of the base episodes so I can listen to them as they were released is a bit of a hassle. Beyond that, I am a huge fan and have relistened going on my fifth time now. Keep up the good work Steve and Cam and all of you wonderful performers!

My favorite podcast
Being a fan of the supernatural and a child of Appalachia, the stories that Steve and Cam weave always tell a thrilling tale that involves the folklore of the mountains in a setting that feels like home.

The darkness beckons
I absolutely love this show and wanted to leave a rating and some hearts ❤️❤️❤️ At this point I just want to support and hear more so I joined the family and subscribed.

So dark and so good!
My Bestie introduced this to me while we were on a camping trip. Everything is so dark, yet told so well. I love how all of the stories jump around the timeline, but then weave back together later on. The story writing, character development, guest voice actors, historical context melded into fantastical myths, everything is just so I even saw the live show. I can’t wait to hear every single story in this world.

Could have been my favorite podcast.
I’ve been with this show from the beginning and have religiously and lovingly listened to each episode as the host wove his tales. But lately I’m so confused I don’t think I can listen anymore. It’s just one red herring episode after another yawing from pillar to post with no continuation dropping characters and plot lines with absolutely no rhyme or reason and by the time a recurring character shows up again you’ve completely forgotten what any of it is about. What are you thinking? Get a clue about writing and producing and drawing your audience in by paying something off once in a while.

Well… it must be challenging to sustain creativity.
Aside from the new season’s intro music sounding like ya’ll hired a band from a bad truck commercial, the dark, mystery, and the horror of this show is fading away.

Just … no
Listened to several episodes to really get a feel of it, and it is not for me. Definitely not for or sensitive to certain ⚫️ crowds, and I feel like I’m listening some one’s racist pappy. The voice is ok for a bit but they should really change it up. Also, couldn’t follow along very well. Storytelling was trash.

I’m only mad because
I only recently discovered this podcast. Why have you been hiding from me?!?! I binged the podcast nonstop. I happily subscribed to The Holler to support the carefully crafted and astounding storytelling of Cam and Steve’s spellbinding delivery.

Blown the heck away!
I just now finished listening to episode 76 and… it’s rare that I’m struck speechless, but dang has this show has done it! I wish that I had enough words to praise everyone and everything that is even tangentially related to this podcast. Throughout its run, it has moved me to tears, outright laughter, raging hatred, pride, and deeply profound sorrow through the artful way that it’s been crafted so as to take the audience along with the characters and allow them to experience it all for themselves. The storylines are pure genius, and every aspect of Old Gods of Appalachia is simply dripping with talent! I am SO glad to have lost myself in this podcast, and the folks behind it will forever have my most sincere, heartfelt gratitude!

Hokey?
I live in Appalachia and am a woman. I have to say I find the podcast rather hokey. The Protestant pastor delivery gets on my nerves but I made it through season 1 because of the GREAT story. I know 80 year olds in my holler that could tell a story better, though. It’s also…too Appalachian. It’s trying too hard. It researched “Appalachian lore” on Wikipedia and found a list of Appalachian words online and made soup out of them. It feels hokey and inauthentic. Lastly, yeah it’s woke and even I get tired of it as a woman. Just give me a good story ok? Now get off my property.

I are so excited for season five! Old Gods is the best podcast and I am still hooked. Family, thank you so much for your stories and all you do for the Appalachian community.

Phenomenal
This podcast is amazing! Through each episode with each season we take a deeper dive into the Appalachian people that make up this fine country.

Absolutely phenomenal
I’m so in love with this show. The narrator tells these stories with such passion and conviction I actually feel like I’m there watching the story unfold. I admit that I never thought much about the Appalachian history or the struggle for survival in unforgiving conditions. But it’s mesmerizing to hear the lore with these stories that u feel that struggle of good trying so hard to triumph over evil. 10/10 I can’t get enough and get REALLY upset when I have to wait for new episodes lol

Great show but…
Love the show but my god there’s usually an average of 7 minutes of ads before and at the end of the show. Way too long and annoying.

Fantastic!!
This is by far my favorite podcast! I’ve listened to it repeatedly because I love it so much!
Don't like this version at all
Ludicrously Good!!
Stories and characters so well written and engaging I’ve listened to all 4 seasons three times!! 20/10 on every count: voice work, music, depth, representation, threads, mystery, foreboding, tension, suspense… aw heck, family, Old Gods is simply in a league of its own! Just GREAT storytelling at its absolute best. (Heed content warnings though).

Exceptional, but please…
Absolutely love the stories and performances but please offer an ad free subscription option. There are just too many ads. The show is worth paying for if the ads can be avoided.
I spent a good bit of time in the Appalachian mountains in my younger days and I can easily feel these stories come to life among those deep forests, ravines and mountain tops!

Probably…
the best podcast I’ve listened to, family. The writing is phenomenal and I love the female centric plot lines. Feeling genuinely glum that I finished season four and eagerly await the next season.

Love it
WONDERFUL narrator, he sounds just like home! Absolutely hooked from the first listen, great music and story telling

Immersive, atmospheric, and spooky - just perfect horror.
I am a huge fan of all things horror - with a preference for the eerie, strange, and spooky over gore for its own sake. This podcast is some of the best horror storytelling I’ve experienced in any medium, not just podcasts. The intertwined storylines and character set up, together with a mix of Appalachian folklore, immerse you in the story and get you invested in the characters (which may leave you grieving for then down the line). Steve and the other voice actors lend authenticity and depth to the storytelling. My only complaint is I’m all caught up on the content and can’t wait for more episodes to come out!

Folklore, horror, realism; beautifully melded
I have absolutely loved listening to this podcast, and it has helped me get over the fact that the Silt Verses is over. Well written and well executed. I appreciate the respect for and representation of queer people and lives, without feeling wedged in or disrupting the story.
BUT, are we aware that each episode starts with 6-8 minutes of ads?? And then ends with more ads? I much prefer the ones Steve reads, at least they are a good fit for the feeling and volume of the show.
The ads feel like too much to me, but I am grateful that the artists responsible for this project are receiving their due. I suppose Ill have to perform my social media rituals and pay my tithe so I can get away from the badgering ads.

Top Tier Podcast with a few minor flaws
First let me say that this is one of the ONLY podcasts I will agree can be reasonably compared to TMA. It is just as immersive, just as complex, and just as well written. I listened to S1&2 twice because I knew it was brilliant and i had to experience it again and I am so glad I did. i am finishing up season 3 and I don’t love it as much, I feel like it is still high quality horror so worth me continuing to listen. I am definitely one of those people who prefers stories about the Walker women and the Underwood family because, duh, witches, and I can’t stand the Barrows. Overall, I have no complaints about the quality of the storytelling.
My only issues are:
1. The S2 variation on the main theme song is the ONLY one you need. I get that the lyrics change to fit the theme of the season but, meh, too bad. That is the best version of the song and you should just keep it consistently. S1 and S3 iterations I can’t skip through fast enough. S2 theme I loved and sang along every time.
2. What happened to Cowboy Apshure???????
3. Voice actor sound levels aren’t always the same as the narration and when a new voice comes in it’s a little jarring.
Also, pay no mind to the broken people who complain about things being too woke. They don’t know what they’re talking about. This is such a tasteful and respectfully made podcast. Kudos.

Impressive Tales Told With Heart and Skill
First discovered in August 2024. I’m addicted. Incredible writing and reading talent (or should say … gifts).

Meh
I wanted to like it, especially since there are so many 4-5 stars, but I just couldn’t. Listened well into season 2 and just can’t follow. I think it’s the delivery/narration. Not sure. I feel like I’m sitting in church with a preacher that’s hollering and shaking his fist. Makes it hard to focus.

Wow!
What a show! No words to describe the character development and story development. This IS my fave podcast! So glad to hear there is a season 5 on the works!

Such a show. I wish I could give it more than five stars.
Every episode delivers in such high-quality from writing to narration to graphics, to music. Thank you all so much for your dedication to the craft of storytelling.

I LOVE this podcast. It’s excellent.

CW spoil the show
It’s a cool podcast, but they need to have a link you can click that gives you content warnings because it really spoils the stories and I try my hardest not accidentally read them.

Best fiction podcast I’ve ever listened to
This is, by far, the best podcast I’ve ever listened to. I started listening a couple years ago, thinking it would be another horror podcast. But those first few episodes hooked me into a wonderful journey. Every single episode on this podcast is fantastically written, sound design is crisp and clear, and it pays it all off with the best narrator I’ve ever heard. Hopefully there will be more episodes and more seasons, and if not, then start a new series. It will be worth it.

Americana at its best
Not only is the storytelling and acting top notch, but it is a joy to hear the rich folklore of Appalachia and America in an entertaining format.

What an incredible story.
This is my third time through this story and it is just as terrifying and engrossing this time as the first two. The writing, production, and performances are as top notch as anything you will find or Netflix or Disney +. Be warned, this stories are not for the timid or faint of heart. But you WILL BE ENTERTAINED and as frightened as any living soul could ever expect to be! But let’s face it, that’s why we’re here, right?
My lingering query: Is a story or a telling? That is the question. I know what I think…

The BEST
This is hands down the best podcast I've ever listened to. I'm addicted and wish I could afford to give enough to their pattern so I can listen to the other stories.
The first version was fine
Awesome podcast until season 4
I really loved this show, found it a few seasons in and listened to it non stop for weeks. I was so excited for rhe 4th season to come out, but the episodes kind of disappoint. I get that they’re trying to stretch the story as much as they can, but compared to the previous seasons, season 4 feels shallow and short. Each episode feels more like a preview or a teaser than a full episode. The content is still good, I just wish the episodes were longer or more engaging.
