When I was starting out in photography I had no idea how to self-critique or even that it was a necessary skill I could develop. Looking back on it, I now realize that self-critique is the essence of the creative process. Too bad this isn't a skill that is taught purposely to all beginning photographers. Not what it is, but what it could be. What the image wants to be. Honesty, empathy, some visual literacy for context, and the experience and wisdom that come with practice.
