Well . . .
For the love of God, could Tom please stop doing American accents, especially southern ones??? He is unintelligible so I Miss important information. I enjoy the jokes as much as the next guy but once a bit is dead, it should be retired. This podcast is great for a medium dive into history. It’s mostly light-hearted and informative. The hosts enjoy teasing each other and public personalities both contemporary and historic. I’ve learned a lot. Give it a listen but be forewarned: any episode on American history will contain a truly horrendous attempt at an American accent. (By the way, gentlemen, the Mexican street food served in a folded and fried tortilla is called a tah-co, not tack-o.)

love this show! But please cease and desist doing American accents. We all know how Brits feel when Yanks try to speak like y’all.

So Good!
They had me at the word “japery” describing the KKK.

Sense and sensibilities
I’ve lived all over the world. Military brat. Met a lot of people. Lived in the south. One thing I love is well researched accurate history done by this podcast. What I hate are silly assumptions about what is sensible and about what people truly think.

Talkin’ Southern
The Southern accent is so bad it’s good. I played it for my son and we both cracked up. Thank you—I needed that. If anyone wants to hear a bad British accent, feel free to look up my podcast.

Simply the Best
Easily my favorite podcast out there. There’s plenty of edutainment podcasts, but this one is more educational than most while still somehow being wildly entertaining. The hosts clearly know their history and our passionate about it while being deeply engaging and enjoyable to listen to. Some of my fellow Americans seem upset about their portrait of America at times. But I think that’s misguided. If you don’t like how the rest of the world views us, then do better.

Good but plz stop the accents
I do like the show. Writing and storytelling are good. Topics engaging. But please stop with the accents, particularly American southern ones. It’s like nails on a chalkboard. I had to stop listening to the KKK episodes.

Not accurate
I’ve always enjoyed this podcast, but I was annoyed by the comment about progressives thinking everything is great in America. It’s the right wing conservatives who are in the process of whitewashing history in school curriculums, museums, glorifying Confederate generals, etc. I was also a bit peeved by the snarky comment that Americans think everyone should be interested in the US Civil War. No offense, but I find the English Civil War pretty boring, even though one of my ancestors was a Roundhead involved in the beheading of Charles I.

Apparently, Tom’s Jimmy Carter accent has shocked the sensibilities of the Deep South. I never thought the South had any. Very informative that. Keep up the good work guys, who knows what else you will uncover! Best regards from Oklahoma

As an American
I love everything about this, it’s informative and engaging in a way my public school education never was. Extra marks for southern accent portrayal, my fellow Americans are only enraged that there’s so much awe-inspiring accuracy originating from somewhere foreign.

Exceptional
I just finished the Ku Klux Klan series—exceptional work. I really hope more Americans take the time to listen to this podcast. I understand why people say the KKK isn’t America; it doesn’t reflect who we want to be or how we see ourselves. There’s so much about this country to love, but in times like these, it feels especially important to understand where these fringe groups come from. It’s a painful and shameful part of our history—one we shouldn’t ignore. I still believe America can be better than this, or at least I hope we are.

It will remind you how much you love history (and a well-told tale)
I found this podcast with the help of a friend just in time for a 14-hour solo road trip. I couldn’t wait to get back on the road to hear the next episode. A truly wonderful podcast.

That southern accent is hysterical
Looking forward to Tom’s interpretation of Boston or New York/Long Island accent

KKK Episodes
Being born in the southern United States, I personally think this is a great series of episodes. It’s a valuable conversation that still has roots in parts of the south today. That being said, I’ll have to share the sentiment others have expressed in saying that Tom & Dominic’s inherent biases of the south come through quite obvious in the use of the “accent” that we southerners are supposed to have. And by the way that bias was also shown in the Iran revolution series when they impersonated Jimmy carters voice. It’s just insulting and I think low class. One other note, their statement about political violence in America being worse than the UK is in my opinion laughable. Hello British treatment of Ireland? British treatment of its colonial possessions? The British empire was founded and built on the institution of violence.

W Tom and Dominick. Amazing podcast, I don’t know what the people who gave one star reviews were talking about. 100% perfect.👌

Stop it!
Your Southern accent was insulting and horrible. It's stereotyping and ignorant

What’s amazing about the Southern accent
Isn’t how horrible it is, it’s how great the other guy thinks it is. Btw, great show.

Southern accent
Please make it stop. It’s so bad it makes me uncomfortable. I was dissociating.

He sounds drunk
I think you should do all accents drunk like the one on your current show.

I always learn and often laugh
I love this podcast and the hosts. I always learn something and really enjoy that they incorporate writings from the period/players. Whoever was attempting the southern accent in the latest episode was hilarious

Outstanding
I love this podcast! My history loving teenage son introduced me to RIH a few months ago. Since then Tom and Dom have become a constant source of information, entertainment and insight. Keep up the great work! We love it.

Accents
Just stop with the stupid accents. Brilliant until you hear his clown like southern accent.
jjones1789
Great podcast… mostly
History is facts, but it’s also narrative. Moving from facts to Narrative changes things: Schools of thought kick in, and finding the ‘zeitgeist’ is Job One. And thus… what good is history if its just about fitting things into YOUR narrative of good side/bad side (usually driven by ‘contemporary’ sensibilities) despite evidence to the contrary? But… this is the tension of writing history. However: The assumption that a southern accent must equate stupid, poor, white and fascist in your Klan series is a huge eye-roll, in an otherwise enjoyable and relevant conversation. Would you believe that liberated African Americans spoke with southern vernacular, too? Or, that people from the south, with this same vernacular, may have also been leaders of the Underground Railroad? So, hoping to offend or paint a Klan member as degenerate because of how they talk doesn’t hit the mark. What hits the mark is the fear felt by the defeat white south, fear of the people they once owned being given what used to be exclusive privileges: education, the franchise, money, land, and administrative fiat. This is what drives the despicable and repugnant nature of the culture behind the rise of the Klan.

Love this podcast but they’re now sponsored by horrible AI corporation Anthropic. Very disappointing.

The Klan
I’m a big fan of this podcast, but I’ve got a bone to pick about this first episode. The liberal left in the US recognizes that the KKK is part of who the US is; the left recognizes that white supremacy has always been part of our story. It is the right in the US that doesn’t want this history to be taught.

Great show bad accent
Tom and Dominic: I’m a huge fan of the show but terms attempt at a southern accent is abysmal… I strongly recommend the two of you go on YouTube and spend some time watching some videos narrated by Shelby Foote- though from a southern perspective, I’m a damn Yankee, I think that might be a good starting point- actually any of the actors doing for Ken Burns Civil War series would probably help. Then try it again. All the best., JC

Stop the Southern Accent
Please. Tom’s rendition of a Southern accent is too awful to be funny. Beyond offensive. People who live in the South do not necessarily have a developmental delay or disability. Many of us can put on our pants one leg at a time, tie our shoes, read books & even count without using our fingers. I don’t even want to listen to this series now & as someone living in MAGA USA, I am truly interested in how those idiots who burn crosses came to be.

It wasn’t about slavery at 1st. It was about getting the south under control. Lincoln wrote and one of his letters if I can win the war against the south without freeing one way I would. I like learning from you guys but for you to say blah blah blah . Really minimize the truth behind the war . It pushes the narrative that this country cared about black American and they didn’t care Americans and it has

Stop the ridiculous accents
I love the content of this podcast, respect the intellect of the hosts, and truly appreciate their senses of humor, but Holland’s attempts at accents, especially those of American Southerners are ludicrous. Listening to them is painful.

A+
Tom's awful american accent really puts a smile on my face. I was worried they might cave to pressure because some people with no sense of humor were complaining after the Carter episodes.

As good as everyone says
This show reminded me why I fell in love with studying history when I was a teenager. Their love for the history is contagious and will keep you thinking and trying to get your friends and family to ask you more questions - and then what happened?! Love it

Purchased for my birthday by my wife, after years of listening as a non subscriber, only to find the RIHC access is no longer available. No access to requests or help. Upsetting, yet another lesson of history!

On My Top 5 List of Podcasts
This is now on my top five list of podcasts. I’m not a huge fan of history and really did not like the subject in school. But I love listening to Tom and Dominic deliver each episode, and I always learn something interesting. The banter between them is quite enjoyable, always kidding each other, and Dominic’s laugh is infectious. A few amusing things I’ve noticed about their delivery: 1) They love to comment on characters’ facial hair, whether it be beards, mustaches, mutton chops, or the like. They often use words like enormous, glorious, or stupendous as adjectives for the character’s follicle endowment.  2) I think I’ve heard or read the word “modernity” less than a handful of times in my life. But on this podcast, I hear the word used several times in many of the episodes. It’s a very popular word with them. Given this is a history podcast likely increases the opportunities to use the word. 3) Tom often opens an episode by delivering a notable quote from one of the historical characters in the account. He attempts to use the accent the character would’ve had. The result is sometimes decent but more often hilarious. I’ve listened to a handful of their episodes, and my favorites so far are their series on the Titanic (6 ep) and Custer’s Last Stand (8 ep).

Absolutely Brilliant!
My new favorite podcasts. No matter what topic, each episode is interesting, informative and memorable. The hosts are incredibly entertaining. The episode on Jimmy Carter and the anecdote about the killer rabbit had me in tears - absolutely hilarious. If you want to learn more about history from brilliant historians, this podcast is a treasure trove. After a week of listening I subscribed to for access to more content and it’s worth every cent.

Love it, but …
This is a really good podcast. Frequent references to Wikipedia don’t inspire confidence, but their ability as storytellers can’t be denied. I have to say, as someone who has listened to almost every episode, that Holland seems to have fallen in love with his own fame, and lately his constant interjection of 12-year-old-boy-humor and weird attempts at acting, are wearing very thin, even as he pursues more spin-off pods.

Banter
Many of us here in America enjoy British banter, as well as hearing English spoken not in the manner of a 16 yr old girl from Santa Monica. Please please ignore the slightly wet and censorious killjoys - keep the humor and DO NOT stop doing the accents!!! These are not the kind of people we want in our elite cohort. Poor form, I think. They’ve let themselves down quite badly. I’m a Dan Carlin fanboy, and I always love listening to Misters Holland and Sandbrook’s take. I always learn something new, something obscure, and something funny

Awesome 98%
Dominic and Tom are fantastic. I would give them 100%, but — 6 episodes on Samuel Johnson?

Great show
Overall, the show is great. I am only giving it 4 stars (still very positive) because they don’t always tell a whole story in one series. The start and ending point in those series feels random and leaves me wanting more.

Why are these guys so weird about women…
I’ve listened for a while and given them so many passes but I’m increasingly getting creeped out about how they speak about women. They’re very reductive and incurious about the women (and too often children) they discuss in nearly every episode - women are treated as currency not just by the subjects of the podcast but by the hosts. The two men labour over pretty disgusting details and it feels really salacious and grim. I don’t know if they can do better… I wish they would try

Best history podcast. Hands down.
I was actually turned onto the podcast through Conan O’Brien’s podcast because he said he was a big fan and being a huge fan of history I went on a massive binge. It’s not just the history. It’s the formatting. It’s the host and their chemistry and even when they’re talking about some pretty dark moments in history, still being able to keep it light without being hurtful or childish.
