For those who love hunting the wild turkey, one of the biggest drivers for such obsession is figuring them out. Today's guest spends a large portion of his time doing exactly that, and he hops on the line with host Hunter Farrior to fill us in on a few things he's learned about the bird along the way. Dr. Mike Chamberlain leads several research projects across the southeast, which study wild turkeys and their behavior, so there's a lot of good to learn as we prepare for the season right around the corner.
In this episode:
- The probability of a turkey egg hatching and becoming a mature gobbler.
- Do jakes breed hens?
- Can you determine a gobblers age by spur length?
- Should you shoot the strutter or subordinate gobbler if two approach you?
- Insight on current studies using devices to read and record public land gobbles.
